20 May 2021  > 14 November 2021 Exposition , Art contemporain

Suspend the course of time and rediscover the Conciergerie, by indulging in the contemplation of the sculptures of the Ghanaian artist.

Presented under the curatorship of N’Goné Fall, General Commissioner of the Africa2020 Season.

The artist imagines, under the centuries-old vaults of the monument, a poetic installation created for the occasion, conducive to meditation on the passing of Time, resonating with the history of the Palais de la Cité, its environment and its medieval architecture.

Two rivers combining textiles and video projection, a nod to the Seine, run through the Hall of Men-at-Arms on old railway sleepers.

On the walls and in the fireplaces, six metal sculptures, assembled from bottle capsules and strips of cans, symbolise doors opening onto an infinite field of possibilities.

El Anatsui invites visitors to reclaim the monument and to become, during the time of a dream, living elements of his installation.

The prism of Africa, to change perspective

Through this exhibition, El Anatsui wishes to permit everyone to re-appropriate this great historic site, to mix our stories and personal emotions.

This installation is presented as part of the Africa2020 Season, conceived as an invitation to look at and understand the world from an African point of view.

One of the most prominent contemporary artists on the international scene, globally respected and recognized, El Anatsui is the winner of the Golden Lion for his entire career. His sculptures can be found at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York or at the Guggenheim in Abu Dhabi.
